N++ Returns: More Than a Decade Later, With Multiplayer

The studio’s unique approach to game development suggests that originality and fun are better than compromise.

Back in 2015, Metanet Software released N++, a challenging 2D platformer that took over ten years to develop. Now, the same team is bringing us their latest creation: N Plus Infinity Times Two, set for release in 2027.

This new game shifts focus from single-player to multiplayer, offering couch co-op and competitive modes with the same slick acrobatic platforming as its predecessor. The duo behind it, Raigan Burns and Mare Sheppard, have been busy prototyping ideas and working on updates for N++, but they've been bitten by the ‘let’s take another crack at it’ bug.

Metanet operates in a different way from most game studios. Despite their success with N+ and N++, they haven’t grown, choosing to focus on finding ideas that are worth pursuing commercially. This philosophy is reflected in the way they view their work: ‘doing something only you can do’ is more exciting and commercially viable.

The inspiration for this new game came from observing how younger players use games, often turning them into multiplayer experiences even when solo. Burns and Sheppard wanted to combine that with classic couch co-op, leading to the idea of revisiting N but with a multiplayer twist. For them, it’s all about feeling that “magic” in their work.

Looking ahead, there are some bigger 3D game ideas brewing, but the studio remains committed to finding new ways to express themselves without scaling up its operations. There is always the possibility of returning to the N concept down the line if they can find a fresh perspective or something new to explore with it.
