Crimson Desert: A Visual Feast with Frustrating Controls

SUNI wonders if Pearl Abyss is trying to turn video games into brain teasers.

Crimson Desert, developed by Pearl Abyss and released on the PS5, is a sprawling fantasy sandbox that rewards patience and curiosity. The game's visuals are stunning, with vast landscapes dotted with ruins and wildlife, but its complex control scheme can feel like an unwelcome challenge.

The game's systems and ideas are abundant, making every discovery feel personally rewarding, from hidden temples to odd cats in armour. However, the main story lacks cohesion, and puzzles often require a degree of frustration to solve due to ambiguous controls and explanations.

Combat offers satisfaction when mastered, with environmental interactions adding depth. Yet, the game's rules are not always clearly spelled out, leading players to learn through immersion rather than explicit tutorials. This approach can be baffling but also compelling as you absorb the world's logic over time.

Crimson Desert is a world worth living in, offering 60 hours of exploration and discovery in its starting region alone. Despite its flaws, it remains an engrossing experience that demands attention and dedication from players willing to dive into its complex systems.
