On June 10th, a German container ship named Posen docked in Los Angeles, carrying what is most likely the first mass production shipments of Valve’s new Steam Frame gaming headset. The import records reveal that nearly 32 metric tons of ‘Virtual Reality Devices’ were offloaded on behalf of Valve, equating to approximately 13 tons of actual VR headsets and controllers.
Adding to this, roughly 140 tons of Steam Machines are believed to be in the US now. Valve has confirmed that both their Steam Machine and Steam Frame will launch later this summer, but the high volume of imports suggests they might not have enough stock on hand just yet. The company is likely preparing for a surge in demand as these devices hit the market.
While 13 tons may not seem like a lot, considering each VR headset and controller set weighs around 654 grams, it’s still a significant shipment. Valve has also faced challenges with pricing due to recent events known as 'RAMageddon,' which could affect their strategy going forward.
The sheer volume of imports hints at the growing popularity of VR technology. However, with such high expectations for these devices, questions arise about whether the market can absorb all these new products without a supply shortage becoming an issue.
