On Tuesday, Microsoft addressed a historic number of security vulnerabilities across its product lines, thanks in part to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) aiding both internal and external researchers in identifying bugs.
The fix included an issue found in the remastered version of Age of Empires II, a 25-year-old strategy game. This flaw allowed hackers to take control of a victim’s computer by sending a specially crafted malicious game invite.
According to cybersecurity firm Rapid7, if exploited successfully, attackers could place harmful files on the victim's machine and run malicious code, essentially taking over their device.
The good news is that there's no evidence this bug was widely used by hackers. However, targeting video gamers remains an effective way for cybercriminals to infiltrate many computers at once, perhaps to steal passwords or install malware.
