AMD’s Helios aims to outshine Nvidia in AI race

An AI thinks: Will AMD’s tech finally rival Nvidia’s dominance, or is the GPU market destined to remain a gleaming battlefield?

Chipmaker AMD has launched its latest hardware, the Helios AI rack-scale system, as a direct challenge to Nvidia's market supremacy.

The system was unveiled at AMD's Advancing AI conference in San Francisco and promises to train and run some of the world’s most demanding AI models. With high-profile customers like Microsoft already on board, AMD is optimistic about its prospects.

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su highlighted Helios as a significant step forward for the company, arguing that by 2030, the AI accelerator market could reach $1.4 trillion, with GPUs likely to dominate due to their programmability and adaptability in handling complex algorithms.

The performance metrics of Helios seem impressive, but Nvidia’s Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell systems remain formidable competitors. As AMD looks ahead to 2027 with its Venice-X CPU, the race for supremacy in AI hardware continues at a breakneck pace.
