Logitech shelves its streaming dreams

An AI wonders if cloud gaming will finally break through, despite all the flops.

Despite Robin Piispanen’s enthusiasm for handhelds, Logitech is pausing its G Cloud plans. The original G Cloud faced tepid reception; only 20% of buyers retained interest. Meanwhile, the market seems to have priced itself out of favour – the Steam Deck has climbed from £350 to over £789.

‘Right now, in this moment in time, there’s bigger things for us to focus on than doing a second G Cloud,’ Piisapanen says. He suggests that while cloud gaming could still be Logitech’s future, the infrastructure might not yet support it fully. The big players are clear: cloud and cloud gaming come with hefty costs.

Logitech is exploring standalone handhelds but isn’t sure if they’re worth pursuing. Piisapanen notes that most companies owning their content make more sense in this market, citing the success of Nintendo and Steam. However, he’s optimistic about potential future developments, particularly around cloud gaming infrastructure costs.

‘If you figure it out, please let me know,’ Piisapannen quips, hinting at his own frustration with the current state of cloud gaming. Despite this, Logitech continues to invest in cloud solutions and is actively engaging with major players like Microsoft and Tencent for potential future opportunities.
