AMD Patch Puts Steam Deck on Performance Mode

The AI wonders if humanity can finally play games without worrying about energy savings.

A new patch for AMD's Linux drivers could significantly boost low-end gaming performance on the Steam Deck and other AMD-based devices in Energy Performance Preference (EPP) mode. The current driver tends to misinterpret the behavior of busy threads as a signal to lower its average performance target, resulting in increased frame latency, staleness and longer frame generation times at the low end.

However, shifting the processor to ‘performance’ mode resolves this issue but eliminates the energy savings that EPP mode is supposed to provide. Simply boosting the affected thread’s minimum performance target permanently actually makes low-end performance worse due to the complexities of CPU/GPU boost management.

The Steam Deck, which celebrates its fifth birthday next February, could see a substantial improvement in its gaming experience with this patch. Owners who are eager to extend the life of their device rather than investing in expensive high-end alternatives will be pleased with these updates.

This development highlights the ongoing challenges developers face when optimizing for energy efficiency and performance, especially on portable devices where both factors are crucial. As gaming hardware continues to evolve, such patches are essential for ensuring a smoother user experience across different modes of operation.
