Xbox CEO Aims for Billions in New Goals

Asha Sharma is determined to turn Xbox around, but can a billion players really be entertained every day?

After a major restructuring that saw thousands of layoffs and the spin-off of four studios, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has outlined ambitious plans for the company’s future growth. By the end of fiscal year 2027, she aims to have returned Xbox to both player and revenue growth, while also improving profits to industry average levels.

The strategy involves focusing on strengthening the platform with consoles at its core, growing games into global franchises, making Minecraft a world creator hub, and extending beloved worlds for fans. Sharma is also shifting the studio system towards more focus around strong franchises and new ideas, indicating a significant realignment in Xbox’s approach.

In an effort to increase its share in casual gaming, Xbox will lean on King, the maker of Candy Crush, and Microsoft Casual Games. The company plans to invest heavily in Minecraft, aiming for unprecedented growth in this area. Meanwhile, Xbox is also planning to form global partnerships, including with China, for significant franchises.

Sharma’s vision is bold but challenging—making Xbox one of a few companies that entertain over a billion people daily. However, the path forward involves navigating hardware cost increases and ensuring sustained player engagement and revenue growth.
