SteamOS is slowly expanding its compatibility on non-Valve hardware. The latest update in SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta introduces initial gamepad support for several new gaming handhelds, including the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ and the Ayaneo Pocket S2. This suggests Valve isn't planning to leave Intel-based devices out of its Linux strategy.

The update also includes improved support for older devices like the MSI Claw and OneXPlayer portable PCs. These updates follow June’s SteamOS 3.8, which highlighted better compatibility with recent Intel and AMD platforms, including controllers from GPD Win, Anbernic, and OrangePi.

While so far only the Lenovo Legion Go S sports a full “powered by SteamOS” branding, Valve seems eager to ensure its bespoke OS works well on various devices. The latest update also allows the new Steam Controller to work with native controller applications even when Steam isn't running, making it more versatile for users who like to switch between different games.
