Stunning demo shows Unreal Engine 6 should be a game changer for rendering cinematics. The latest version of Epic Games' engine introduces an experimental reference mode for Lumen, its global illumination system, that can produce stunning path-traced renders using only emissive sources.
Dylan Browne, VFX artist and Unreal Engine supervisor, shared the first glimpse in a YouTube video, showcasing how this new feature could significantly reduce rendering times while maintaining high-quality lighting and reflections. Each frame takes around 30 seconds to render, with almost pixel-perfect results on an AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7975WX and Nvidia RTX 5090.
The new Lumen mode is primarily aimed at cinematics but could have implications for games as well. While it runs in real-time, it's currently noisy, indicating there's still work to be done before it reaches its full potential. Developers are eagerly awaiting the Early Access release in late 2027 and a full launch within the next year.
Game developers and filmmakers alike have high expectations for Unreal Engine 6. The engine’s convergence with the Unreal Editor for Fortnite and its shift towards a new text-based programming language, Verse, also hint at broader changes to come. However, given the timeline, it will likely be some time before these tools become mainstream.
