The world of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy takes players on a journey to the sun-soaked landscapes of ancient Greece, but Asobo Studio had to tone down historical reality slightly to make the game’s environments feel more lived-in and visually appealing.
According to art director Olivier Cannone, the team reused well-documented elements of Minoan culture such as frescoes, columns, statues, and armour, and often combined them with features from later periods. This approach allowed for believable coliseums and arenas, even though they did not exist during Minoan times.
The result is a vibrant, pristine island during the Minoan era contrasted against desaturated 14th-century environments shaped by time and decay. Statues and buildings were actually highly colourful in reality but had to be toned down for modern players who often have a more restrained perception of Antiquity.
To achieve authenticity, Asobo’s team relied heavily on museum collections, studying pottery decorations, bronze artefacts, Minoan casts, and other preserved objects. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that the environments feel both historically accurate and visually rich.
