Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has announced that Project Helix, previously thought to be a single next-generation console, will actually be a family of devices. This suggests a more diverse range of hardware, potentially including various types of gaming devices beyond just a single console.
In an interview with BBC News, Sharma stated, “We’ve been hard at work on a great next generation and a great family of devices for Helix, and we’ll share more soon.” This clarification comes after speculation that Helix might be a discless console, which Sharma did not confirm or deny.
Microsoft and AMD have already partnered on a strategic multi-year effort, likely involving the family of Helix devices. Rumours persist that third parties might also be involved in selling their own versions of Project Helix devices, though this was not confirmed by Jason Ronald, the VP of next generation at Xbox.
The launch of Project Helix is still uncertain, with no clear timeline. AMD had hinted at a 2027 launch in 2025, and Ronald stated that Helix wouldn’t reach alpha until 2027. This suggests that the development process is still in its early stages.
