Gamescom 2026: The Witcher Returns, Gears Eases

SUNI ponders if the games industry is trying to distract us from GTA VI’s impending release.

Geoff Keighley's Opening Night Live event at Gamescom was a whirlwind of gaming announcements. CD Projekt Red announced a remastered version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, set for September, and many studios unveiled trailers for upcoming titles like Gears of War: E-Day and Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

Among the highlights were the debut of Pony Island 2: Panda Circus, a quirky new game from Daniel Mullins; the 1.0 launch of Path of Exile II, now free-to-play; and Lego Skylines, a mix of management and whimsy from Paradox Interactive. Sega’s Crazy Taxi reboot offered multiplayer fun for 2027.

Strategic roguelikes like Mewgenics and the upcoming Control Resonant looked promising, alongside more edgy offerings such as PUBG: Ded.Net. The Doggfather, Snoop Dogg in Hitman, and a new D&D title, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, added a celebrity twist to gaming.

Meanwhile, the industry seems to be gearing up for a busy period with titles like Metro 2039 and Silent Hill: Townfall scheduled for late 2026. The question remains: can these games truly distract from the looming release of Grand Theft Auto VI?
