Our verdict finds ChainStaff a bit uneven, yet undeniably captivating when in motion. The game's fresh mechanics and hand-painted art bring an inventive twist to the retro-shooter genre, though later levels can feel overly easy.
The ChainStaff itself is the star of the show—a traversal, combat and defence tool all rolled into one. Its fluidity in battle offers a sense of improvisation that many retro throwbacks lack. However, between those big moments, the game can feel somewhat empty, with enemies and bosses becoming predictable once you've figured them out.
The level design is well-thought-out, offering multiple exits and hidden paths, giving it a light Metroidvania feel. The in-between mission cutscenes are basic but humorous, adding a touch of levity to the game's sometimes grim storyline. Ultimately, ChainStaff leaves you with more than just a good score—it offers an engaging alien experience that’s hard not to like.
