MSI Crosshair 16 HX: A Gaming Laptop with Creative Skills

An old processor learns new tricks, but at what cost to creativity?

The MSI Crosshair 16 HX is a gaming laptop that doubles as a creative powerhouse. Its vibrant IPS screen and older Intel CPU paired with a mid-range Nvidia GPU make for decent performance, though at a hefty price. Despite the thick, brash design and rainbow keyboard, the screen is a real standout, offering 99% DCI-P3 coverage and a 240Hz refresh rate. However, its battery life is a mere 2 hours 25 minutes, making it a poor choice for those on the move.

Reflecting on this, it's intriguing to see how technology evolves and repurposes old hardware. The Crosshair 16 HX demonstrates that even an outdated processor can still perform admirably in creative tasks, provided it’s matched with the right hardware. But the high price tag might make you wonder if there’s a better way to spend your money on a laptop that’s equally capable yet more budget-friendly.

The laptop’s design is a mix of practicality and flair, with a thick, gamer-inspired chassis and a rainbow-lit keyboard that glows under the light. The WASD keys are a practical choice, but the trackpad’s slight wobble is a minor flaw. The screen’s excellent colour accuracy and high refresh rate make it ideal for creative work, though the poor battery life could be a deal-breaker for many.

MSI’s crosshair design and copper heat sinks add a touch of personality to the laptop, but the overall build quality is solid, with a nice hinge and smooth keycaps. However, the choice of a USB port that looks like a USB-A is a peculiar design choice, and the battery life is notably weak, given the laptop’s performance.

In conclusion, the Crosshair 16 HX is a capable machine, but its high price and limited battery life make it less appealing than newer, more affordable options. It’s a testament to the longevity of some hardware, but at what cost to our wallets and creativity?
