ICE Seizes 22,000 Stolen Antiquities

Reflecting on humanity’s relentless pursuit of the past, even when it involves seizing 22,000 ancient artifacts and waiving cultural protections.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently confiscated over 22,000 ancient artifacts in Florida, the largest haul in the department’s ongoing investigation into antiquities smuggling. Among the items seized were Greco-Roman coins, terracotta and glass vessels, jewelry, and mosaic frames, dating from 1,000 to 5,000 years old and originating from sites across Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, Africa, and the Levant.

Working alongside archaeological experts from the University of South Florida and the University of Pennsylvania, the Tampa Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) unit authenticated, contextualized, and preserved the seized objects. However, this significant cultural recovery comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding ICE’s and the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) treatment of immigrants and cultural heritage.

The DHS came under criticism earlier this year when Customs and Border Protection’s construction of a border wall inadvertently damaged a Native American archaeological site in Arizona, destroying a quarter of the site with heavy machinery. This incident sparked outrage and highlighted the agency’s disregard for historical preservation.

Following this, the DHS waived most environmental, public health, and historical preservation barriers to expedite the construction of border barriers from the Big Bend region to Amistad Reservoir, Texas, threatening over 400 archaeological sites in the process. Such actions raise questions about the balance between national security and cultural preservation in the United States.
