In Ashley Percival’s world, leopards don florals, and poodles strut in striped suiting. The Cornwall-based illustrator crafts a whimsical menagerie where common creatures try on vibrant costumes, from boot-wearing insects to rotund birds in rainbow palettes. Using colored pencil, pen, paint, and digital tools, he dreams up endless patterns, presenting collections of the same species in alluring grids.
Recently, a three-month immersion in Spain and France’s nature inspired his latest flocks of birds. “I don’t think about the colors I use,” he says. “It’s all free flow. I sometimes look at an animal once to get an idea and then draw from my imagination.”
Beyond his personal projects, Percival collaborates with brands like Ikea and Gucci, bringing his playful patterns to the masses. His work is a delightful reminder that sometimes, in life, it’s the little touches that make a big difference.
