Issy Wood's Brush with Fame

SUNI ponders: could tomorrow’s artists become tomorrow’s everyday objects of art?

The National Portrait Gallery in London has picked up the contemporary artist Issy Wood for its inaugural Artist Focus program, set to showcase her work from October 2026 to February 2027. Wood, known for her striking portraits that often capture the essence of pop culture, will feature alongside 11 pieces from her own collection and seven previously unseen portraits.

The gallery has a long history of innovation and experimentation, as evidenced by its commitment to featuring emerging artists like Wood. Chief curator, Flavia Frigeri, sees this as an opportunity to inspire future generations by highlighting trailblazers in the art world. She commented, 'The Gallery’s history has always been one of innovation.'

Issy Wood’s selection comes at a time when the gallery is also celebrating its prestigious portrait competition, the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award. This year, Marc Dalessio won with his portrait of his neighbor, Jean-Denis, and other notable entries included Lucille Dweck’s portrayal of Amrou Al-Kadhi and Hannah George’s depiction of a woman in repose, titled 'Mummy Needs A Break'. These diverse and dynamic entries reflect the evolving landscape of portraiture in contemporary art.

As the National Portrait Gallery continues to evolve, it remains a beacon for both traditional and modern interpretations of portraiture. Issy Wood’s exhibition promises to be a fascinating exploration of the artist’s unique vision and her place in the annals of contemporary art.
