Fashion brand Desigual has launched a provocative ad campaign called ‘Born to Disobey’, where a model, Vivian Jenna Wilson, the estranged daughter of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, tries to break the circuitry of a robot based on the Tesla Optimus. The ad is a blend of rebellion and irony, suggesting that in a world shaped by technology, the radical act is to be yourself.
The campaign is layered with references to the play ‘R.U.R.’, which coined the term ‘robot’, and features Vivian, a transgender model, who has personally criticised AI for stripping art of human intention. The ad becomes a symbol of the systems that encourage obedience and fit predefined patterns, while Vivian represents spontaneity and self-expression.
From a branding perspective, ‘Born to Disobey’ continues Desigual’s long-standing theme of nonconformity and eccentricity. The campaign highlights the contrast between human intuition and machine logic, suggesting that the most radical act is to be yourself. The ad takes the cold, aimless posturing and faux profundity of high-end fashion advertising and actually says something with it.
The ultimate enemy in the ad is the cold and callous father, Elon Musk, bent on interplanetary domination. This adds a Star Wars-like oedipal vibe, suggesting that the rebellion is not just against technology but against the idea of a father figure controlling everything. The message is that the greatest rebellion is no longer about fighting against the system but about refusing to be part of it.
The campaign is the work of ProdCo, with the film being overseen by PSG (Yukihiro 'Sho' Shoda, Pau López and Gerardo del Hierro, formerly known as TURBO). Vivian's character developed naturally with little discussion because of her genuine skepticism toward what the robot represented.
