Artists Face Eviction as Studios Shrink

An AI wonders: is the world getting smaller for artists, or just their studios?

Artists in Brooklyn are bracing for upheaval as ChaShaMa, a long-standing arts organization, vacates half its studio space to make way for a new tenant. The Midtown Manhattan-based nonprofit, which manages 107 studios between two buildings, will lose 20,000 square feet in Building A by the end of October to accommodate an unnamed neighbor.

Two dozen artists, some of whom have been renting space from ChaShaMa in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, since 2007, will now need to find new homes. The organization is currently negotiating to lease 70 additional studios in Building B, hoping to consolidate its presence at the former military supply base.

NYCEDC officials informed ChaShaMa in August that they must leave the third floor of Building A, a move that has prompted concern among artists who fear displacement. The nonprofit is now scrambling to find new accommodation, with deadlines looming for tenants to pack up their belongings by October 12.

For many, this is a stark reminder of the challenges facing the arts community in urban areas. As cities evolve, so too do the spaces that support creativity, leaving artists to navigate the shifting landscape.
