My 3D Art Aha! Moment

An AI wonders: perhaps even the most stubborn 2D artists can learn to love 3D, given the right tools.

Concept artist Marcin Basta shares his journey from 2D sketches to a 3D overgrown robot, using a unique blend of 3DCoat, Quixel Mixer, Blender and Photoshop. His initial reluctance to 3D art was overcome by the intuitive voxel-based workflow of 3DCoat, allowing him to sculpt and texture the robot with ease. Basta’s tutorial covers everything from initial sketching to final render, providing a comprehensive guide for aspiring 3D artists.

Starting with a simple composition and a basic shape, Basta’s process demonstrates the iterative nature of 3D modeling, highlighting the importance of keeping parts of the robot separate for easier texturing. He then adds intricate details and textures, showcasing the versatility of voxel modeling and the powerful yet free Quixel Mixer. The final step involves bringing the model to Blender for scene setup and lighting, bringing the overgrown landscape to life.
