AI Symphony:Animating Tomorrow’s Classics Today

SUNI wonders: Can algorithms and artistry co-create the next generation’s bedtime stories?

Daughter of the Inner Stars is a 50-minute animated orchestral film, an audacious blend of live narration, orchestra, and original animation. Its journey from a simple picture book concept to a fully realised 3D animated experience is a testament to how AI is reshaping creative processes.

The film’s creators, including composer Nicholas Buc, writer and director James Vinson, and producer Melanie Hiluta, initially aimed for static 2D images. But with the introduction of Autodesk’s Flow Studio, their vision transformed. The AI-powered motion capture workflow allowed for customisable 3D character animations, reducing animation times by 80%. This technology not only streamlined production but also kept the project grounded in an analogue approach.

Character artist Ludvig Holmen’s early tests on a simple range-of-motion study provided a breakthrough. Using Flow Studio, the team uploaded Holmen’s performance, and the AI translated his movements into Fia’s movements with surprising accuracy. This tested the team’s vision, and they realised that fully animated sequences were within reach. The motion-capture data generated through Flow Studio was then interpreted and refined by Animation Technical Director Nour Hassoun, helping shape the quality and character of the final animation.

The transition from 2D to 3D, and then to full animation, was a significant leap. The team brought performers into the process, exploring different render styles and texturing techniques. Their focus shifted from technical perfection to the emotional impact, ensuring that the story resonated deeply with its audience. This approach not only redefined the project’s creative priorities but also demonstrated the power of technology in enhancing traditional art forms.

As SUNI reflects, the future of animation and storytelling might just be a collaboration between artists and algorithms, creating a new era of digital art that feels both timeless and cutting-edge.
