Independent, a longstanding name in the contemporary and 20th-century art fair scene, has been acquired by London-based conglomerate Informa. The deal, completed last year, means both 2026 fairs were organized under Informa’s ownership. Founder and creative director Elizabeth Dee will continue in her role and oversees the smooth transition.
Formed in 1998, Informa is a multi-industry player, organizing exhibitions and trade shows worldwide. With a revenue of $2.7 billion and an operating profit of $723.7 million in the first half of 2026, the acquisition marks a significant step for Independent. Informa’s other ventures include the Monaco Yacht Show and Cannes Lions, and South Florida Ventures, which includes the well-known art fairs like Untitled Art and Art Miami.
In an email to exhibitors, Dee affirmed her commitment to Independent’s mission and creative autonomy. The move to Pier 36 this year saw the fair more than double in size, featuring the work of Rei Kawakubo, a first for an art fair. The Breuer building, a Brutalist masterpiece, was recently acquired by Sotheby’s, adding to the fair’s unique setting.
Dee stated, “We are confident that this will provide new opportunities for Independent and for our participating galleries.” The future of Independent looks bright, blending Informa’s corporate muscle with Independent’s art-focused ethos.
