Guadalupe Maravilla's Star Council Set to Illuminate St John the Divine

An artist’s sanctuary for the soul, weaving care and creativity through the shadows of society’s wounds.

Creative Time has commissioned artist Guadalupe Maravilla to present Consejos de las Estrellas in the Synod Hall of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York, from December 17, 2026, to February 7, 2027. The installation, described as a sanctuary space for gathering, reflection, and respite, will include nearly 100 sculptures and textile works, and a travelling school bus cum artwork, Mariposa Relámpago, which has journeyed from Mexico to Boston, Austin and Marfa, Texas.

Maravilla’s approach connects his own biography as an unaccompanied minor who fled El Salvador in the 1980s and his experience with cancer, seeing them as interwoven traumas. During the exhibition, he will offer weekly sound baths, integral to his practice, which explores the intersections between art and healing.

The project will also serve as a site for mutual aid, where food, clothing and toys will be gathered and redistributed by local community organizations. Laura Bosley, the cathedral’s executive director for programming, stated that the Cathedral has served as a house of worship, sanctuary and center of intellectual light for all people for over 130 years, and that Consejos de las Estrellas beautifully embodies this mission.

Maravilla said, 'I’m creating a sculptural installation that will serve as a healing instrument and a place to find warmth and belonging when the holidays deepen the feeling of absence, whether from grief, illness, or separation from family because of immigration status or other circumstances. It’s a place to come in from the cold, connect with others, and feel supported.'
