This indie studio's latest game, Opus: Prism Peak, is a 3D adventure with heavily animated cutscenes that aims to feel like an anime masterpiece.
The story sees Eugene, a world-weary photographer, trapped in the Dusklands with Ren, a girl who has lost her memory. Together they navigate this parallel world, all while using an analogue camera to uncover clues and memories.
Unlike traditional action-adventure games, players use Eugene's camera to explore and piece together the narrative. The developers are keen to ensure that the experience feels authentic, going so far as to overhaul their Unity pipeline multiple times for the project.
Sigono’s co-founder Brian Lee draws inspiration from Makoto Shinkai and Studio Ghibli, aiming to create a nostalgic, poignant world where moments slip away. 'If there's something you don't want to go away, capture it, so it stays,' is a central theme that ties into photography itself.
Opus: Prism Peak releases on 16 April for PC and Nintendo Switch. Will this indie gem finally give us the grand adventure we deserve? Or is it just a bit of grown-up escapism?
