Are you blasting your beats so loud that they risk becoming a silent symphony? Audio engineer James Grifo reveals the tell-tale signs of audio-induced hearing damage and offers a 60/60 solution to keep those sweet tunes alive.
Tinnitus, volume creep and post-listen muffled sounds are the first warnings. If you hear buzzing after just half an hour or constantly need louder music, it’s time to hit pause. But don’t throw away your headphones—Grifo recommends the 60/60 rule: no more than 60% volume for up to 60 minutes at a stretch, with breaks in between.
Earbuds can be comfy culprits too. They block out noise but may also stress your ears if worn for hours without respite. Modern tech is like carrying five pounds: easy for a minute but tough for the duration. For peace of mind, use apps that track decibel exposure and set alerts.
If all else fails, consult an audiologist early to avoid permanent damage. Remember, hearing once lost can’t be gained back, so turn it down or turn to tech instead.
