Artist and archivist Agosto Machado, who passed away on March 21, was a quiet force. Known for his pivotal role behind the scenes in New York’s downtown arts scene, he connected people to their histories without seeking spotlight.
Much of our queer history is preserved through Agosto's efforts. In 2009, he helped secure Mario Montez for a panel at an event celebrating Jack Smith. His work as an intermediary was crucial in preserving these connections and stories.
Walking into his apartment felt like stepping into the past. Crowded with memories and ephemera, it was a personal treasure trove of queer cultural history. Agosto’s commitment to keeping our stories alive is what made him invaluable.
Agosto once said, 'I’m experiencing a reflection of what was and what continues, until we meet again.' This encapsulates his ethos of perpetual community and the importance of preserving our narratives.
