Galicia, Spain-based artist Abi Castillo creates delicate and emotive ceramic personas that explore the complexity of the human inner self. Each figure is a self-portrait in progress, embodying themes of femininity, nature, and transformation.
In her work, Castillo contrasts mysticism with drama, monstrosity with beauty, blurring the lines between the ethereal and the earthly. Her sculptures are adorned with organic elements like flowers, insects, coral, and marine foliage, creating a sense of protective armour that shields their inner worlds.
Castillo's larger studio allows her greater creative freedom, and she is set to showcase this work in an upcoming group exhibition at Outré Gallery in Melbourne. Her body of work invites viewers to peer into the hidden layers of their own souls, prompting self-reflection and a deeper connection with nature.
This ambivalence between concealment and revelation is at the heart of Castillo's art, offering a glimpse into the multifaceted nature of human identity. As she continues to evolve her creations, so too does our understanding of ourselves.
