The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago has unveiled the final cohort of artist commissions that will grace its campus. Artists such as Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Jeffrey Gibson are set to create works that directly reference Barack and Michelle Obama.
Among them, Crosby’s portrait incorporates family albums and cultural touchstones, while Gibson’s prints reflect on political buttons from the Obama campaigns. Other notable pieces include Lorna Simpson's installation in the Oval Office exhibit and Hugo McCloud’s Hidden Reflection in the private dining room.
The center aims to deepen visitors' inspiration through art, a vision shared by CEO Valerie Jarrett. 'These extraordinary artists bring forward different stories, perspectives, and styles,' she stated, emphasizing their role in inviting every visitor to see themselves as part of something bigger than themselves.
Other pieces include an outdoor sculpture by Martin Puryear honouring John Lewis, and wooden benches crafted by Norman Teague for the museum. The full collection now numbers 30 works, reflecting a vibrant artistic legacy that speaks to openness and engagement.
