When deciding which game engine to use for Mixtape, the studio Beethoven & Dinosaur chose Unreal Engine. But it wasn’t just about tools and features; the decision was driven by a desire to move forward creatively. The Artful Escape, made with Unreal Engine, earned them AU$25,000, kickstarting their career.
Mixtape’s visual aesthetic is decidedly handmade, using step animation reminiscent of claymation. Technical director Roman Maksymshyn explains that custom rendering systems were used to achieve a 3D effect with a 2D feel, pushing the boundaries of what Unreal can do. The soundtrack, featuring classics like Joy Division and DEVO’s ‘That’s Good’, is integral to the game’s emotional core.
The game structure, heavily influenced by mid-80s MTV aesthetics and midnight radio, features characters from different eras living in a town that feels like a classic radio station. Game design acts as a concept album, with gameplay informed by the meaning of each song.
Mixtape aims to be the antithesis of AI-generated sloppiness, showcasing the meticulous love poured into every detail. The game is set for release on 7 May across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch (including Xbox Game Pass).
