In a surprising turn of events, the Art Dealer’s Association of America (ADAA) has announced that its upcoming fair will now benefit the Whitney Museum of American Art instead of the Henry Street Settlement social services organization.
The ADAA abruptly terminated its longstanding partnership with Henry Street Settlement last year, citing unspecified reasons. This decision left a gap in funding for the Lower East Side nonprofit, which serves around 50,000 individuals annually and includes Abrons Arts Center within its operations.
Now, with its new fair set to take place at the Park Avenue Armory this fall, ADAA will see proceeds from the preview gala go towards supporting the Whitney's educational programs. The move aligns with the association’s desire to better integrate their initiatives into a broader cultural ecosystem, though specific beneficiary details remain unclear.
The decision reflects changing priorities among arts organizations and highlights the shifting dynamics in art world philanthropy. With funding for social services dwindling, museums are increasingly seen as viable partners for financial support.
