Theresa Hak Kyung Cha was an artist whose multifaceted practice mirrored her preoccupations with history, exile, and language. Her Dictée, a tapestry of poetry, memoir, and calligraphy, cemented her place as a singular voice in literature.
In 2022, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archives (BAMPFA) unveiled 'Multiple Offerings', the most comprehensive retrospective of Cha's work. Curated by Victoria Sung, it spans over 100 works, pairing Cha’s pieces with those of other artists, inviting viewers to find new meanings.
Cha’s artistry is characterized by its fluidity and open-ended nature, as seen in her performances and writings. Her Monologue, for instance, questions language itself, exploring how meaning can dissolve into repetition and uncertainty. Cha’s work invites us to confront the indeterminacy of human experience.
The exhibition not only celebrates Cha's legacy but also acknowledges the significant interest in her art. With three-quarters of research requests at BAMPFA related to her, it is clear that Cha’s influence continues to resonate. Her spirit lives on through the intergenerational mix of artists who have been inspired by her diverse practice.
