A tearful image of a family forced apart by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has claimed the 2026 World Press Photo Award. The photo, taken in New York during President Trump’s crackdown, was captured by Carol Guzy for the Miami Herald. She said: “This photo should be painful to view, and I hope it stirs people out of any sense of complacency.”
Other winners include a Maya Achi woman from Guatemala enduring legal battles over wartime sexual violence and Palestinians in Gaza battling Israel’s aid blockade. The contest also recognized stories of displacement and environmental crises, such as a Hong Kong homeowner sobbing after his house was engulfed by fire.
The images, alongside three long-term projects, will be exhibited globally starting at Amsterdam's De Nieuwe Kerk tomorrow, drawing attention to the human cost of government policies.
