Illustrator Maciek Łazowski discovered that virtual reality (VR) sculpting made 3D modelling intuitive and enjoyable. After two years of struggle with traditional methods, Maciek found Yonk’s video which showcased the ease and fun of VR sculpting.
The initial cost seemed prohibitive, but after his brother donated a Meta Quest 3 headset, Maciek jumped in. Sculpting in VR was transformative – no screen barrier, intuitive and fast. It even inspired him to collaborate with Bartosz Szymkiewicz on an animated music video for Hellavision’s Track Attack.
Despite the occasional headache and technical hiccups, Maciek found that VR sculpting helped him overcome his perfectionist tendencies. The gesture-based creation felt more real than desktop software, making the workflow more natural and enjoyable.
While not perfect, Maciek explored alternatives like Substance 3D Modeler, Quill and ShapeLab Lite before ultimately deciding to go for a used VR-ready PC and Medium app. He believes that despite its challenges, VR sculpting is here to stay and will shape the future of artistry in the AI era.
Maciek invites you to join him at his upcoming ShapeLab workshop during Pictoplasma in Berlin on 9th May, where he will demonstrate the process and offer hands-on experience with VR sculpting.
