Nestling among the national pavilions of the Venice Biennale, a seagull has become an unexpected attraction. The bird's egg-laying antics outside Poland’s pavilion in the Giardini have left visitors bemused as photographs circulate online and in the art press.
Organizers believe this is the first known instance of such a prominent nesting spot within the exhibition grounds. Despite no formal guidance, a fence with a warning sign reading ‘Attention! Bird Nest’ has been erected. One visitor, Marta Carraro from Genoa, found it curious and unexpected to witness a bird claiming its own place among crowds and artworks.
Seagulls are not always popular in Venice, infamous for snatching food from pedestrians' hands. However, at the Biennale, this seagull has acquired an accidental artistic status. Elisabetta, a Venice resident, found it cute and sensitive that a fence had been built around the nest.
Meanwhile, the Polish pavilion was closed in the afternoon as part of a historic strike. A sign on the massive doors read, ‘We are not indifferent to the decision to include aggressor states in this year’s edition.’ They encouraged everyone to support the Ukrainian Pavilion without naming countries.
Artist and art director Luca Orlandi from Verona pondered whether nature was healing or if anthropization had gone too far, with human systems inevitably overlapping with ecosystems.
