Thousands of demonstrators marched through the streets of Venice on the eve of the public opening of the Venice Biennale to protest Israel’s participation. Organized by Art Not Genocide Alliance (ANGA), the march saw national pavilions from multiple countries shut down in a 24-hour strike.
The organizers cited Israel's actions, including killing over 73,000 people and destroying cultural institutions, as reasons for their decision. Protesters chanted slogans like “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” alongside musical selections celebrating solidarity.
“The artists united will never be defeated,” marchers echoed, adapting a classic slogan for their cause. ANGA has over 236 signatories, including renowned artists and curators who are part of the Biennale's main exhibition team.
Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and banners in the shadow of luxury yachts alongside the lagoon. Some wore T-shirts bearing the names of Palestinian artists who could not attend due to their untimely deaths, reflecting on personal connections through loss.
