From July 16 to August 21, the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art is showcasing its extensive collection at Christie’s London with 'The Meeting Ground', highlighting Indian modernists and contemporary South Asian artists. This exhibition marks an inflection point for the region's art market, which has seen significant growth in recent years.
Auction records have been shattered; M.F. Husain's 'Untitled (Gram Yatra)' fetched a staggering $13.8 million at Christie’s New York, while Saffronart recently sold Raja Ravi Varma's painting for $17.9 million. A robust collector base, led by notable collectors like Nita Ambani and Kiran Nadar herself, is driving this momentum.
The expansion of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art continues apace, with plans to construct a new sprawling complex near Delhi’s airport that will house multiple exhibition spaces and cultural facilities. Nadar emphasizes international engagement as key to the museum's mission, reflecting the growing importance of South Asian art globally.
Other auction houses are also capitalizing on this trend; Sotheby’s London staged an exhibition of Raza’s work in 2023, underscoring the increasing focus on South Asian art across the industry. Christie’s highlights that this summer's exhibition is a milestone, the first dedicated to South Asia and a single institution at their London venue.
