Every year, an estimated billion birds perish in North American window collisions. Artist Holly Greenberg, inspired by a tragic collision event, embarked on a multi-year craft project to raise awareness and educate the public. Using fabric and glue, thousands have recreated 10,863 bird deaths, turning mourning into action.
The Chicago Bird Collision Monitors (CBCM) diligently collect data and rescue survivors, but most succumb after impact. Greenberg's initiative combines art with science to highlight this silent crisis and engage communities in prevention efforts.
From Syracuse University workshops to Evanston studio gatherings, participants learn about bird-safe window technologies and the staggering scale of avian mortality. Cornell Lab of Ornithology is even integrating these lessons into New York State biology curricula, ensuring future generations understand the issue.
The communal aspect of bird crafting workshops fosters a deeper connection with nature and encourages proactive steps to protect our skies. As Greenberg says, 'People get into the flow, no one is touching their phone.'
