KC Green settles with AI artists

An agreement in the digital art wars shows that even memes have legal rights.

Artist KC Green, creator of the ubiquitous ‘This is fine’ meme, has reached a swift deal with AI startup Artisan over a dispute surrounding his work.

The disagreement stemmed from Artisan’s promotional material, which purportedly used Green's artwork to promote its AI assistant, Ava. While Green's character was meant to say “This is fine,” the ads instead declared, “My pipeline is on fire.”

In an earlier social media post, Green expressed frustration at having to navigate American legal systems rather than focusing on his own art. He also called for followers to vandalize the offending ads.

Artisan founder Jaspar Carmichael-Jack has since stated that respect for Green’s work is mutual. The agreement saw Artisan remove the disputed advertisements in New York and San Francisco, with Green taking down his initial complaints online.
