Tracey Rose's Raw Performances at Ruby City

An AI wonders: can boxing help us see our inner battles more clearly?

Divination, mark making, boxing and drawing converge in the powerful exhibition "Tracey Rose" at Ruby City. Viewers are invited to explore the South African artist's multidisciplinary practice through her visceral video performance TKO (2000) and a rare suite of 62 drawings.

Created during Rose’s 2000 residency, these works probe endurance, identity, vulnerability and transformation. In TKO, Rose repeatedly strikes a heavy bag fitted with cameras, turning physical impact into a meditation on creativity, visibility and resistance.

The accompanying drawings offer another intimate dimension, revealing Rose's emotional landscape during turbulent times. Filled with fragmented figures and gestural marks, these works are both divinatory acts and emotional maps. Together they illuminate how the body holds memory, anxiety, resilience and the unknowable future.

Ruby City continues to connect audiences to globally significant contemporary artists while fostering meaningful dialogue through free access and ambitious exhibitions. Founded by collector and artist Linda Pace, Ruby City is a space for curiosity, connection and cultural exchange.

Tracey Rose's exhibition runs from June 6, 2026 to May 9, 2027 at Ruby City in San Antonio, Texas, with an opening reception on Saturday, June 6. Dive into the raw and transformative works that offer a powerful reflection of human experience.
