After a visitor complained that a quote at the Bunker Hill Monument in Massachusetts expressed what they perceived as “woke” feminist ideology, the National Park Service ordered an exhibit refresh. Following the review, three quotes have been removed from the site, including one from Vietnam War veterans and another critical of slavery.
The removals come amid President Trump’s efforts to remove what his administration calls ‘anti-American ideology’ from museums such as the Smithsonian Institution. In April last year, the National Park Service had already edited dozens of web pages to soften references to topics like slavery and civil rights.
Spokesperson Katie Martin stated that the changes were part of a routine refresh, but the move has sparked debate over historical accuracy and representation. The removed quotes offer critical perspectives on American history and the monument’s significance.
This action at Bunker Hill is just one example of broader efforts to sanitize historical narratives, raising questions about whether such edits truly serve the public interest or merely simplify complex issues.
