The Sam Gilliam Foundation, established in 2023 to champion emerging artists and civic activism through the lens of the renowned painter’s legacy, has appointed its first executive director. Dr. Steven Nelson, who previously worked at the National Gallery of Art, will oversee this important cultural institution.
Recalling his initial encounter with Gilliam’s iconic drape paintings in the 1990s, Nelson speaks from a deep appreciation for the artist's impact on modern and contemporary art. “It is an honour to steward his legacy,” he says, promising continued support for emerging artists and thinkers.
Meanwhile, Aperture HQ will celebrate its grand opening with a housewarming exhibition, showcasing works by renowned photographers Dawoud Bey, Robert Frank, Deana Lawson, and Carrie Mae Weems. The event is set for September 18 in New York's Upper West Side.
