Steven Adrian Stewart, the founder of Kansas Gallery and a key figure in the contemporary art scene, died on May 26 at age 46. Known for his warm and inclusive nature, Stewart was a pivotal force in showcasing emerging artists such as Michael Berryhill and Halsey Rodman.
Stewart’s journey began with a move to New York City in 2000 after high school, where he quickly became part of the art community. His roles at galleries like Bellwether and Sue Scott Gallery prepared him for the founding of Kansas Gallery in 2011. The gallery showcased works by several artists before closing its doors in 2016.
After a brief stint back home, Stewart moved to Melbourne with his wife Jen Berean where he founded Futures Gallery in 2021, following this with roles at Neon Parc and Gertrude Contemporary. A return to Lawrence saw him spending time at Elizabeth Leach Gallery and working on a furniture company project with his brother Joel.
Friends and colleagues remember Stewart for his unassuming charm and unwavering support of artists. Ethan Greenbaum, who benefited from Stewart’s early confidence in his work, expressed gratitude for the mentorship and friendship that spanned years. Artist Sylvan Lionni spoke fondly of their instant connection and the adventurous spirit that defined their relationship.
