The 2026 BAFTA Young Game Designers competition has crowned its winners, showcasing the unique blend of creativity and technical skill among young gamers. This year’s standout is Dylan Williams, whose game Kompis and the Wells of Fontis takes us on a quirky journey down metaphorical wells, battling inner demons with wisdom from water spirits.
The game’s minimalist 2D art style evokes Roger Hargreaves’ Mr Men characters but delves into profound themes of self-belief and overcoming negative thoughts. For teenagers like Dylan, the competition offers more than just accolades; it serves as a stepping stone towards their future in the games industry.
Thiago van Vlerken Rene’s Yggdrasil is another winner, combining Norse mythology with a platformer adventure to create an engaging narrative. His journey from Valkyrie to trial highlights themes of self-discovery and redemption, all wrapped up in a compelling story.
The Game Concept category also awarded creative minds like Grace McCullagh Stacey for her whimsical Nobody Nose, and Erin Goddard’s TailBreak, which brings co-operative puzzle-solving to life. These games not only entertain but also offer valuable lessons in resilience and teamwork.
Beyond the competition, BAFTA Young Game Designers aims to provide pathways into the industry through workshops and events during National Careers Week, ensuring that these young talents are well-prepared for their future roles.
