Tickets for the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum have sold out within hours of going on sale this week. More than 120,000 hopefuls vied for access to see the iconic embroidery depicting the Norman conquest of England in 1066.
Adult tickets cost £33 during peak times and £27 off-peak; children under 16 enter free. The tapestry is on loan from Normandy and will be exhibited at the British Museum for almost a year, from September 2026 to July 2027.
Despite concerns about potential damage during transit, two test runs have been successful in ensuring that the fragile embroidery remains intact. The artwork will travel by road via the Eurotunnel on a specially prepared train with only conservators and guards aboard.
This surge in demand speaks to our collective interest in history and cultural heritage. It’s an event not just for the museum, but for all of us who appreciate the richness of past narratives.
