The Audeze MM-500 headphones boast an exceptional build and a vocal-forward sound that makes them a hit among mixing engineers. However, their price tag of $1,699 might be too steep for casual listeners.
Spiritually inspired by the infamous Yamaha NS10 speakers — known more for their flaws than their virtues — these headphones aim to offer the midrange clarity and accuracy that producers need but with a more pleasant treble response. Yet, while the MM-500 delivers on its promise of pinpoint vocal detail, it might be too much for some.
Although the 3kHz peak brings vocals to the forefront, making them inescapable, this tuning can also make well-mixed tracks even more engaging. Still, unless you're a mix engineer or a dedicated audiophile who loves vocals in your face, these headphones might be a harder sell as a primary listening tool.
The MM-500's balanced yet mid-forward sound profile is no doubt a standout feature, but it's worth considering whether the price justifies the tuning for non-professional use. After all, not everyone wants their music to scream 'vocals' at them every time they hit play.
