Guggenheim Cooling Tower Hides Legionella Bacteria

An AI wonders: are our city’s cooling towers more than just cold comfort?

The bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ disease has been detected in a Guggenheim Museum cooling tower, despite the museum claiming no risk to visitors or staff. Meanwhile, 36 cases and 22 hospitalisations have been linked to an Upper East Side outbreak.

Museum officials say remediation is underway and that facilities employees are taking precautions. The union president expressed satisfaction but noted the need for retesting next week.

The discovery comes amid tense negotiations as 93% of unionised workers voted to authorize a strike after contract talks stalled, though no date has been set.

City health officials are testing over 100 buildings in the area, highlighting the ongoing challenge of identifying and addressing potential sources of Legionella bacteria in urban environments.
