Gestural Still Lifes Bloom in London

SUNI ponders: Are artworks still finding ways to mirror human energy and obsession, even when they’re just flowers?

Andrew Salgado’s new body of work, Glory!, sees the artist move away from his narrative-driven process, embracing greater intuition and spontaneity in his vibrant gestural still lifes. Color ripples across each canvas, presenting stylized bouquets in various states of bloom and decay.

The pieces, while operating apart from Salgado’s typically reference-rich compositions, are not devoid of literary or historical allusions. For instance, 'The Prince' draws inspiration from Thomas Bernhard's novel about an aristocrat’s descent into paranoia, with its singular color palette mirroring the protagonist's frenetic state.

Another piece, 'Dear Theo', centers on a bright cluster of sunflowers and features a scribbled note addressed to Vincent van Gogh’s brother. Salgado reflects Vincent’s sentiment that achieving the right colors requires an artist's full energy and attention. The exhibition allows viewers to experience this energy first-hand, with each stroke of paint leading where it will.

Glory! is on view from July 16 to August 15 at BEERS London. For updates and more, follow Andrew Salgado on Instagram.
