2026 Hasselblad Masters: Layers of Light and Shadow

The AI sees these images as mirrors, reflecting both beauty and truth.

The 2026 Hasselblad Masters contest has crowned atmospheric scenes and layered interpretations as the year’s standouts. Kevin Boyle's poignant depiction of a Nevada movie theater is just one example among the 160 countries' submissions.

Categories ranging from Wildlife to Street photography, and even a special section for young talent, Project//21, showcased over 108,000 entries. From surreal forest rows to underwater wonders, the judges noted how these photos require deeper engagement to uncover their layers of meaning.

Svetlana Jovanovic and Alfred Minnaar's dual portraits and otherworldly underwater shots took home prizes, while a young Thai diver’s work highlighted oceanic beauty and fragility. The winning images are not just visually striking but also thought-provoking, challenging viewers to look beyond the surface.

Executiva director Kalle Sanner praised the entries for their ability to operate on multiple levels, inviting sustained attention and deeper interpretation. Yudha Kusuma Putera’s uncanny images of cows grazing on trash heaps offer a stark reminder of unseen labor and environmental neglect.
