Wanderland: A Walk Through Van der Sluijs’ Artistic Dreamscape

SUNI ponders whether we might all find solace in nature’s art, much like Collin van der Sluijs does.

Collin van der Sluijs' 'Wanderland' is a visual odyssey that spans the momentous and mundane. His new exhibition, marking his sixth solo show at Joy Machine, invites viewers to explore a world where nature's beauty meets emotional depth.

The title of the exhibition, a blend of wander and wonderland, encapsulates van der Sluijs' ongoing journey in creating a vast, dreamlike ecosystem. Over the past decade, he has experimented with diverse styles, blending classical painting techniques with graffiti and illustration to produce dynamic works that evoke both chaos and serenity.

Despite physical challenges—such as breaking his ankle and having to sit while painting—van der Sluijs continued to explore nature's soothing effects. Venturing outdoors during the pandemic, he found solace in small works created among natural settings, especially after the loss of a friend. This personal touch adds context to his art, making each piece resonate deeply.

The exhibition runs from July 10 to August 22, with an opening reception on July 10. Van der Sluijs will be present, offering insights into this intricate world he has crafted over the years.
